If you’ve read my blog post “Don’t Worry About What Anyone Thinks“, you already know how damaging paying attention to what others think is to you achieving your goals in life. Worrying about what other people think about you and what you are doing to better your life.
Well today I want to introduce you to a similar idea that’s just as damaging and limiting to you creating the life you want to live.
We’re talking about the common practice of comparing yourself to others. Comparing your level of success, achievement, your lifestyle, to those of others around you.
Judging your efforts and your accomplishments against the achievements and life of others will make you feel that you are “inferior” to them. That they are “better” than you are.
And this is absolutely NOT the case.
There is no need for you to keep up with anyone. In fact, you must avoid this practice. Instead, only keep up with yourself.
Simply… Focus on YOU, never on others.
Instead of using someone else’s achievements as the focus of your personal goals, focus on YOU and bettering YOUR achievements. Which is simple to do, and will take a huge burden off your shoulders. Instead of feeling worse every time you see someone else doing better than you.
This may seem like a simple concept to you, and it is. But don’t let the simplicity of this idea cause you to dismiss it. Because it is one of the most important lessons you can ever learn…
If you want to create a better life for yourself, one step at a time. The life YOU want to live. Not someone else’s life.
Never compare yourself to someone who is doing what you want to be doing. Just observe where they are and what it took for them to get there. So you know the path you can take to do the same, or do even better!
And never compare yourself to a family member who is successful, even if your family has always seemed to use that person as the
standard that everyone else in the family is supposed to model.
To help you wrap your head around this, just think about the world of high-level sports. Whether it’s sports in public schools, sports in college, sports at a professional level… even sports on an Olympic level.
There is one way of thinking that is common to people trying to excel in any of these areas. It is… that serious individuals who are striving for big goals NEVER compare their performance to their competitors.
The compare their performance to their own past performances. They strive to “beat their best”… not someone else’s.
This way, they are not trying to be better than others in their field. They are just trying to be personally better than they have been in the past. Whether last year, last month or yesterday.
Embrace this way of thinking yourself, and you’ll never think you are “inferior” to someone else ever again.
Instead, you’re only bettering yourself, so you can climb the “achievement ladder” one step at a time. While feeling great with each achievement. With ever step you take up that ladder.
So as long as you think this way, you’ll never feel bad about where you are today. Because you’ll always know that your mission is to make YOUR life better. And NEVER to “keep up” with someone else who may already be where you want to be.
Think about this for the rest of the day. I hope it helps you to enjoy every step down the path of Escaping the Employee Trap…
And living the life YOU want to live!
